Co-Op Workshop

Co-Op Admin & Management
While researching for a dissertation topic, Helen Altenbach, a Ph.D. candidate in Organizational Leadership, began to see the benefits of creating a sustainable economy in the Arts through the Co-Operative business model. Instead of writing about co-ops for the next 4 years, Helen decided to start one - Los AnCellos.
The traditional nonprofit model presents multiple barriers for artists. One of which is the disconnection from the “upper crust” of the dominant society that historically provided charitable support to organizations that they can more easily identify with based on socioeconomic, racial, and cultural commonalities.
Los AnCellos acknowledges diversity in cultures and backgrounds as a strength in today’s artists. We embrace inclusivity and grass-root efforts in building within and for our own communities. Worker co-ops aim to benefit the members who produce creative products by giving ownership to each member in an egalitarian, equitable, and democratic way. One member, one vote.
